Hortinvest orchard and project manager Ross Kirk is overseeing construction of Southern Fruits International LP’s leading-edge packhouse at Tarras, Central Otago, along with project partner and landlord, Mackersy Properties.
Tuatara Structures is constructing the packhouse which is central to our packing and marketing operations. It has a footprint of more than 4,500 square metres and will be fully operational for the 2022 summer harvest.
Southern Fruits International LP has partnered with Tomra Compac to outfit the packhouse with the world’s latest technology. Once complete, the packhouse will process and pack cherries grown at Lindis Peaks and Mt Pisa orchards. Over time, it will pack cherries and other summerfruit lines for Central Otago producers.
Ross Kirk has extensive experience overseeing packhouse construction and fit-out and is supervising the build and detailing.
Infrastructure will incorporate a 16-lane Compac cherry processing machine and accommodate approximately 70 workers during peak periods. Facilities will include cold rooms, an office block and large staff facility area.
Sales and marketing manager Sharon Kirk is responsible for setting up the export logistics, sales and financial systems leading up to harvest.
